The Art of Hair Weaving
By Jennie Amit Gandhi

Hair weaving is a process of addition or extension of hair by weaving or braiding. In the process human hair or synthetic hair is woven to the root area of the hair so that it grows naturally. It is also termed as hair intensification and hair integration.

There are many reasons why women today go for hair weaving. Not only women even men go for this hair technique. The basic reasons why people go for weaving of hair is baldness and a wide range of hair and scalp diseases like alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, bums, radiation, etc. The weaving also enhances the hairstyle of an individual. Today easy to do hair weaving kits are also available in the market.

Different hair types are used for various hair weaving technique styles. The most common types are:

• Weft: It is the hair that is sewn at the top. The hair is sewn either using a machine called machine weft or using hand termed as hand-weft. Depending on quality of hair wefts are classified into remi weft and non-remi weft. Remi hair is also called virgin hair. It is bundled in a manner where roots of the hair fall on the one side and tips of the hair on the other side. Non-remi hair is also termed as fallen hair. The roots and tips of hairs are all tangled up with non-remi hairs.
• Synthetic Hair: They are made of a range of synthetic fibers. Synthetic hairs come in weaves and single strands for braids.
• Human Hair: They are more versatile because they are easy to color, curl and appliances can be easily used on human hairs.
• Indian Hair: They are thin and strong.
• European Hair: They have soft texture.

The most common and popular hair weaving techniques are as follows:
• Bonding: This is the most popular temporary weaving method. In this method tracks of hair are glued together to the roots of the hair using a special adhesive.
• Tracking: This method is also called pinch weaving, micro weaving and track locking. In this method thin strands of hair are positioned horizontally on the scalp. These strands are the reinforced with threads in a lock stitch.
• Cornrow Tracking: The oldest weaving technique in which tracking is done with cornrow braids.
• Invisible Hair Weaving: This is a process where the weaving is done without the use of threads and glues.
• Fusion: In this method a machine is used to adhere human hair extensions to strands of natural hair. The machine used for the purpose is similar to a hot glue gun.
• Netting: This method includes weaving of hair extension on a surface formed by braiding natural tresses under a thin net. Netting last for about 3-4 months.
• Extend Tube Technique: In this method the hair is attached with small clamping tubes. Hair is then sectioned and pulled through tube fastener and sealed.

If you consider the following instructions, hair weaving can prove to be the most easily manageable hairstyles:
• Use a mild, non-alkaline shampoo for washing.
• Completely dry your hair before weaving.
• Always comb the bottom of the hair first.
• Apply a gentle gel for a fresh and wet look.
• Include rich amount of minerals and proteins in your diet.
• Avoid stress and prolonged exposure to heat.
