How to Determine the Health of Your Hair
By Sue Phillips

Healthy hair is usually smooth, shiny and has good elasticity. Split ends and breakage are at a minimum and hair is fairly easy to comb (not brush) when wet. Chemical services are able to be performed with predictable results and hair loss rarely exceeds 50 hairs per day.

If the above description doesn't sound like your hair, there are a few things you can do to be well on your way to a healthy and beautiful head of hair, regardless of your genetics:

1. Eat healthy
2. Never use a brush on wet hair
3. Avoid chlorine and other chemicals
4. Use good hair care products

The last point is the one that I tend to stress to my clients, because it is the one that I, as their stylist, can control. I usually recommend a hair product line based on the type of hair they have. Most professional hair product brands have a specific regimen for each haircare need. KMS, Joico and Brocato haircare brands come to mind as they have different specialty lines for every hair type and structure. Even with using premium hair products, there are a few things you need to know.

Shampoo is not meant to condition the hair. It is meant to cleanse and remove buildup only. Even so called "Conditioning shampoos" are not conditioning, although they may be less harsh than other shampoos. Also, shampoo needs to be emulsified in the hands before applying to hair. Make sure it is not concentrated on one part of your head. Most people do not need to shampoo everyday so if bed-head is your morning problem, rinse and condition your hair every other day instead.

Conditioners need to be used daily and weekly. Daily conditioners maintain the hair's moisture balance and make hair more manageable. Weekly conditioners or reconstructors will add the needed moisture and/or protein that your hair may be lacking. They can also infuse hair with protective ingredients designed to prevent further damage.

Styling aids, aside from helping you style your hair easier, often can provide an additional coating on the hair to form a barrier against potential blowdrying, sun, or environmental damage.

After purchasing your professional hair products, make sure to read the manufacturer's information to determine that you are using the product to receive the maximum benefits. You too will have a healthy head of hair before long!
